Lotus developing turbo Proton minivan

protonexoraprestige0While at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) presenting a special SAE seminar on the making of the Proton Exora, Proton also showcased a Proton Exora Prestige turbo prototype. The Malaysian automaker and full owner of Lotus revealed a turbocharged variant of the company’s first-ever minivan is currently in development with assistance from Lotus Engineering.

First shown at the Exora official launch party in April (without the prototype turbo engine), the Proton Exora Prestige Concept previewed an upscale trim level complete with an intercom system, massage seats, privacy glass, beverage cooler, 19″ LCD television, sportier bodykit, and more that is now available in limited quantities on a special order basis to select VIPs.

Paultan reports the concept’s revised engine was built in-house by Proton using off the shelf aftermarket parts to modify the Lotus-designed 1.6L Campro four-cylinder. The production turbocharged powerplant will be completed with help from Lotus however.

Sources indicate a target launch date near the end of 2010 to mid 2011. Expect production power output to number less than the stated 270 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque of the concept. Perhaps this engine will be fitted in future Lotus models?
