Proton revs up Lotus in Malaysia

Lotus Showcase 2009

Lotus Showcase 2009

Malaysian automaker Proton is showcasing almost the entire lineup of Lotus cars to the Malaysian public for the first time since it bought the British marque in 1996.

The five day Lotus Showcase 2009 event aims to boost Lotus’s presence in Proton’s home country and increase sales to 60 units annually. Over the past seven years since Lotus’s introduction to the Malaysian market in 2002, sales have totaled just 150 cars.

Lotus Group and Proton chairman Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh said the showcase would enable customers to get better acquainted with the Lotus brand before the launch of the Lotus Evora.

We want to create more awareness before the Evora comes in so that people can appreciate the value of the Lotus…

…Lotus is purely for the sports enthusiasts and thrill seekers but we expect the Evora to enlarge our target market.

Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir officially confirmed the Lotus Evora will launch in Malaysia in the third quarter this year. To date, Proton has offered the Elise, Exige, and Europa to Malaysian customers.

Lotus and Proton can expect an encouraging response as the Lotus Showcase comes after recent significant price cuts on Lotus models in Malaysia. Prices have dropped from around RM400,000 to RM240,000 for an Elise S and RM350,000 for an Exige S. The Europa S retails for about RM300,000.

The price reductions were made possible after Lotus was successfully registered as a Malaysian product and able to secure a government-issued import duty waiver.

The Lotus Showcase 2009 will be held until July 5th at The Garden Mall in Mid-Valley and is open from 10am to 10 pm. On display are an Elise S, Exige S, Europa SE, and 2-Eleven.

if they do this for the past 10 year lotus can beat or equal in number to porshe in malaysia. if lotus can reduce sentiment of good feeling of japanese sport car in malaysia its good for proton to come back in malaysia market. and by getting performence engine from petronas is a good move by the new owner.
