Proton mulls Europa revival, shows eight concepts in Malaysia

Proton’s expansive display at the 2010 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show was the stage for the debut of the Proton Lekir Concept. A barely disguised Lotus Europa, the Lekir wears what appears to be a modified front bumper based on the Dodge Circuit EV concept, while the rear bumper design is a bit more unique.

Depending on which page you read, Proton’s official website for the Lekir lists ┬áthe drivetrain as both a 1.6L CAMPRO engine producing 220 hp and also as the Lotus’s original 2.0 turbocharged engine.

Proton has not officially commented on whether the Lekir will enter production.

This is not the first time another badge has utilized the Europa to create a concept vehicle — American automaker Dodge modified a Lotus Europa to create its 2009 Dodge Circuit EV Concept.

Proton and Lotus at the 2010 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show

Proton’s display enclaved a small Lotus exhibit featuring a Lotus Exige Cup 260 and the Asian debuts of the new Lotus Esprit, Lotus City Car Concept, and Lotus Evora S.

Echoing the Lotus onslaught in Paris, Proton’s Kuala Lumpur exhibit displayed no less than eight concept cars to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary.

The Lekir and Proton’s other concepts on display are all named after 15th century Malaysian warriors.

Yet the Lekir was not Proton’s only badge-engineered concept on display. The Proton Jebat Concept is a modified version of the production Proton Inspira, itself just a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer.

The Proton Tuah Concept previews the next-generation Proton Persona.

The Proton Lekiu Concept is an SUV based on the Proton Exora van. Rumor is that Lotus Engineering and Proton are working on a production version for China’s Youngman Auto to be sold under the Lotus Europestar joint-venture brand in China.

Proton displayed two concepts based on the Proton Saga; the Saga EV Concept and Kasturi Concept, which is just a Saga fitted with a bodykit.

A Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing Edition was modified to produce 200 hp, repainted, and renamed as the Proton Satria Neo R3 Concept.

The Proton Emas Concept first shown in March was also on display.

What's the point of having a high hp with sportish look but you can't speed more than 110 km/h because AES?

Plus, you can't have all these cool features for the Malaysian people because most of them can't even drove a car; the speed like crazy as if they stole a car, they don't give signal lights when making corners or changing lanes, they are daft (similar to 'kurang ajar'). The Indians, Malays and Chinese are all the same. Show-off prick as if they F1 drivers, my ass.
