Article from the June 1993 issue of Road & Track magazine. While it wears a Lotus badge, was the car really Lotus-based or was it actually a Bugatti underneath the skin? Only Bertone knows for sure. Member “fightingtorque” of Lotus Esprit Forum found this Lotus Evora crash prototype at the Hethel Engineering Centre and couldn’t resist snapping some photos with his Lotus Esprit. Today we share a bit of history with these two Lotus print advertisements from an issue of Autocar published in 1983. UPDATE: The car was sold for £105,000 to a buyer from the Middle East. After renderings of the next Esprit were released earlier this month by Motor Trend, a new rendering has been circulating the web from World Car Fans and artist Andre Avarvarii. Last weekend’s Lotus Festival held at Snetterton in the UK was a mecca for all things Lotus, with thousands of people and all sorts of Lotus models both historic and modern in attendance. Motor Trend has released two renderings illustrating their idea of what the next Esprit may look like. EVO is reporting the next Esprit may source a high-revving 500 hp V10 engine from the upcoming Lexus LF-A supercar. The £100K-plus V10 Esprit would be poised for battle with the Lamborghini Gallardo, and a lower-priced 417 hp V8 model (sourced from the Lexus IS-F) and 300 hp Toyota V6 model would round out the lineup. As Lotus has forged a close relationship with Toyota, the V10 rumor seems plausible [...] The next few years should prove to be very interesting times for us Lotus enthusiasts. The Evora is currently being launched to much media acclaim, and Lotus is working on bringing convertible and supercharged variants of the Evora soon enough. |
